Almost 17k COVID-19 cases new record-high in Metro Manila -- OCTA

The tremendous increase in the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases continued as Metro Manila registered a new all-time high number of infections on Sunday, Jan. 9, the independent research group OCTA said on Monday, Jan. 10.

Citing data from the Department of Health (DOH), OCTA Research Fellow Dr. Guido David said in a Twitter post that Metro Manila recorded 16,924 new cases on Sunday.

As such, Metro Manila's average daily attack rate or the number of new daily cases per 100,000 population is now at 73.5.

The DOH reported that the country also tallied its highest single-day number of COVID-19 cases on Sunday at 28,707.

On Monday, David projected that the entire country may register 25,000 to 30,000 new cases. Of this number, 14,000 to 17,000 COVID-19 cases will be from Metro Manila.

In an interview on GMA News, David said that Metro Manila's COVID-19 positivity rate, or the percentage of individuals who yielded positive results from among those who were tested for COVID-19, has further increased to 52 percent.

It has slightly increased from the 50.5 percent recorded on Jan. 7--the first time it exceeded 50 percent in Metro Manila.

However, David expressed hope that the positivity rate in Metro Manila will not reach 60 percent.

"Hopefully hindi, kasi you know, kapag tumaas pa siya beyond 50 percent, kunyari tumaas to 60 percent, talagang we will be definitely losing visibility (Hopefully not, because you know, when it's going to rise beyond 50 percent, for example to 60 percent, we will definitely lose visibility)," he said.
