During the joint presser of DepEd and the Office of the Vice President (OVP) on Friday, Sept. 30, Education Spokesperson Michael Poa announced that the agency had completed the curriculum review for Kinder, Elementary, and Junior High School (JHS).

“What we will be doing from September to October is we will have consultations with our stakeholders which started already,” Poa said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Poa said that the consultation would include private stakeholders and education experts so the review conducted for K to 10 will be vetted.

The review for K to 10, Poa explained, focused on the learning competencies.

“It was really looking at the learning competencies because there is an impression that there’s a lot of learning competencies ,” he said.

The purpose of the review, he explained, is to assess what the learners need. “Also, we want to focus on literacy specifically on foundational literacy and functional literacy,” he added.

Since the K to 10 review still needs to be vetted, Poa said that a comprehensive report on the results of the review is not yet available. “But once it is vetted by stakeholders, we will discuss this before we start the review for SHS,” he added.

Meanwhile, Poa said that K to 12 reviews --- which will focus on SHS or Grades 11 and 12 --- will start in November this year.

Poa also expressed hope that DepEd will be able to finish the K to 12 curriculum review “within a year’s time” which is the directive given by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.

“By June 2023, we are hoping that we will have finished the review for the K to 12 program,” he added.

As per DepEd, K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education.

Comprised of six years of primary education, four years of JHS, and two years of SHS, the K to 12 program aims to “provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.”
