State of calamity declared in San Miguel, Bulacan

San Miguel town in the province of Bulacan has been placed under a state of calamity after experiencing massive flooding due to heavy rains brought about by Super Typhoon "Karding" on Sunday, Sept. 25.

During the regular session of the 11th Sangguniang Bayan of San Miguel held at Conrado S. Pascual Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 27, a resolution was passed placing the entire municipality of San Miguel under a state of calamity due to the damaging effects of the flood on agriculture, livelihood, and infrastructure.

The regular session was attended by Vice Mayor John A. Alvarez; Councilors Romeo C. Dizon, Emmanuel DC. Magtalas, Anika Corrine S. Tan, Joseph Noel P. De Guzman, Richard P. Dela Cruz, and Crisanto DG. Tiongson, president of the League of Barangay Captains.

Upon the motion of Councilor Dizon which was duly seconded by Councilor Dela Cruz and all members present in the session, Municipal Resolution No. 2022-064 was approved placing the entire municipality of San Miguel, Bulacan under a State of Calamity due to Super Typhoon Karding that hit parts of Luzon early this week.

The declaration was signed by Mayor Roderick DG. Tiongson, Vice Mayor Alvarez, presiding officer, and Margarita Lualhati M. Banzuela, secretary to the Sangguniang Bayan.

Tiongson had requested the Sangguniang Bayan in a letter dated Sept. 27, 2022, for the passage of a resolution declaring a state of calamity in the entire town citing a report from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

The MSWDO and MDRRMO reported that there are 30,081 households, 39,903 families, and 133,095 individuals were affected by Typhoon Karding, while houses and other properties in the municipality remained submerged in floodwaters.

The Municipal Agricultural Office (MAO) also reported that crops and vegetables were also damaged, affecting the livelihood of the farmers.

Five members of the Bulacan Rescue team lost their lives while helping flood victims in Barangay Camias.
