REFLECTIONS TODAY
At the start of his public ministry, Jesus called some people to follow him— fishermen like Simon and Andrew, James and John, and the tax collector Levi (Matthew). There was also Philip in the Gospel of John (1:43). Jesus would later say, “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you” (Jn 15:16). Along the way, however, there are those who present themselves to Jesus, determined to follow him. They are attracted to Jesus by the authority of his teaching and his power to do signs and wonders. Jesus does not refuse them, but puts before them the cost of discipleship. He reveals to them the fragility of his situation, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Because he chooses to be an itinerant preacher, giving all for the Kingdom of God, he forgoes the comfort and security of a home. Hence, the would-be disciple has to sit down and ponder very well. Once he “sets a hand to the plow,” deciding to follow Jesus, there should be no more turning back. He has to stick with Jesus through thick and thin.
Gospel • Luke 9:57-62
As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding on their journey, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.” And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” Jesus answered him, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
