UP Baguio condemns red-tagging of students


The University of the Philippines Baguio University Student Council (UPB-USC) released a statement on Tuesday, Sept. 27, condemning malicious text messages from an unidentified sender that red-tags and threatens the safety of its students.

The messages, UPB-USC said, contain allegations that its students are "fighting the government."

"Hands off our students! No to red-tagging!," said UPB in a Facebook post.

"The University Council-UP Baguio condemns this form of harassment aimed at terrorizing our students. We stand against malicious labeling and threats against freedom of expression," UPB-USC added.

"As a University, we encourage our students to engage in the discourse for social justice to serve as catalysts for change. As a democratic society, we should be open to varied perspectives and seek solutions to achieve inclusive development," it continued.

In a post, UP Rises Against Tyranny and Dictatorship - UP Baguio said that the Saint Louis University Supreme Student Council was notified regarding alarming text messages that threaten the "lives, safety, and security of the students of UP Baguio and SLU."

The student councils of the said universities are now monitoring the situation and coordinating with progressive organizations and school administrators to investigate the matter, UPRISE - UPB said.
