A total of 5,024 families or 21,796 individuals were evacuated from their homes as the Marikina River reached the "critical" 18 meter water level early Monday morning, Sept. 26, due to heavy rainfall brought about by typhoon “Karding.”
As of 3 a.m. the Marikina City local government, via the Marikina Rescue 161 monitoring, recorded the following number of families and individuals that have been registered in their designated evacuation sites:
SCHOOLS SITES:
- Malanday Elementary School - 645 families, 5,200 individuals
- Concepcion Integrated School (CIS) Elementary Level - 210 families, 1,600 individuals
- Concepcion Integrated School (CIS) Secondary Level - 111 families, 763 individuals
- Nangka Elementary School - 1,379 families, 2,716 individuals
- H. Bautista Elementary School - 394 families, 1,380 individuals
- San Roque Elementary School - 78 families, 272 individuals
- San Roque NHS - 34 families, 126 individuals
- Fortune Elementary School - five families, 22 individuals
- Fortune High School - two families, eight individuals
- Marikina Elementary School - 64 families, 294 individuals
- Sto. Nino Elementary School - 198 families, 878 individuals
- Sto. Nino High School - 116 families, 561 individuals
- Parang Elementary School - 128 families, 512 individuals
- Parang High School - 86 families, 389 individuals

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro visited and inspected the evacuation sites with members of the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), and Marikina Rescue 161.
Teodoro asked for assistance from the national government and the private sector in providing relief goods for the evacuees.
Residents were forced to flee their homes when the Marikina River water level reached 18 meters at 12:33 a.m. on Monday. The third alarm remained intact until 4 a.m.
The water level has gradually subsided, beginning from 5 a.m. at 17.9 meters.
As of 7:15 a.m. the river is at 17.3 meters, downgrading the alert level to the second alarm.
Even if the water level was downgraded to the second alarm, Teodoro urged evacuees to remain in the centers for their safety and wait for the water to revert to its normal level before returning to their homes.
Evacuees began returning to their homes on Monday afternoon. As of 2:30 p.m. the river's water level was back to its normal level at 14. 9 meters.
The local government readily conducted clearing and cleaning operations in the city's affected areas.
The Riverparks Authority flushed the mud and grime at the underloop of the Marikina Bridge above the river in order for vehicles to regain access to the roads.
The emptied evacuation sites are also being disinfected since classes will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Marikina City was one of the northern Metro Manila cities placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) No. 4 by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday afternoon.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC) issued a red rainfall warning to Metro Manila as of 10 p.m. on Sunday.
