Beat the gloom, heavy rains, and cold weather in these snug and stylish OOTDs

These constant downpours that usher in the “ber” months limit our Outfit of the Day (OOTD) choices. Imagine the nightmare of having to navigate flooded roads in suede shoes!

Adapting to unpredictable weather seems like a hassle, but it’s par for the course in the ever changing seasons of fashion. Don’t worry too much about what to wear. Here are some fashion approaches ideal throughout the gloomy season.

Wear it like Cobain

The grunge era came into full swing in the ‘90s with rock band Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain turning heads all over the world. He was often known to sport laidback outfits that evoked a relaxed vibe despite his manic performances onstage.

The Cobain aesthetic was best displayed during his performance in 1993’s MTV Unplugged in New York. He wore an olive-green cardigan, topped over a plain tee and jeans combo.

The rockstar’s Christian Roth sunglasses and oversized sweaters were considered the pinnacle of grunge styling. Cobain’s affinity toward distressed jeans, layered flannels, silk pajama shirts, and painted nails provided the momentum for pervasive trends among the youth—no to mention the no-style style that spelled a-t-t-i-t-u-d-e.

Now that we have so much more to gripe about, including climate change that’s blowing these fierce habagats our way, we can dress like Cobain again. Plus,  a warm and cozy cardigan sweater is perfect for any cold day. For extra homey feels, go for wool.

IT fashion

Georgie from the film IT

A yellow raincoat is reminiscent of children in horror settings, fitting as October marks the beginning of the Halloween season.

Two characters come to mind, Coraline Jones from the beloved Neil Gaiman novel, and Georgie Denbrough from Stephen King’s critically acclaimed It. Both wore yellow raincoats, which have since become ominous in scenes involving inclement weather or gray days.

Protect yourself from the rainy weather while in cosplay. Just don’t go peering down a sewer or get close to any buttons on ragdolls.

Ang Probinsyano look

One of my favorite go-to outfits for the cooler season is the denim jacket, which my mother jokingly refers to as the “Cardo Dalisay” look.

She calls it such because it was the signature the late action superstar Ferdinand Poe Jr. gave the character, with guns blazing to save the day in his flicks. The look has been passed onto Coco Martin, who played the modern-day interpretation of Cardo Dalisay from FPJ’s show Ang Probinsyano.

I’m not an action star, wearing a denim jacket makes me feel like one. Its extra pockets are convenient for keeping some valuable items and the denim certainly keeps me comfy in gloom, not to mention ready for anything.
