Trough of 'Karding', 'habagat' to bring scattered rains over most of southern Luzon, Visayas

The trough or extension of tropical storm Karding and the southwest monsoon will bring scattered light to heavy rains over southern Luzon and Visayas in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Friday, Sept. 23.
Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may prevail over Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, the northern portion of Palawan, Bicol Region, and the entire Visayas.
In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Karding slightly accelerated and was last seen 1,235 kilometers (km) east of Northern Luzon.
It has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.
Based on the latest track forecast, the storm will move westward, while gradually speeding up towards the east coast of Northern Luzon, where it is likely to make landfall on Sunday, Sept. 25.
By Sunday morning, PAGASA said Karding may bring light to heavy rains over Batanes, Cagayan, and Isabela.
Rains will gradually become moderate to heavy by Sunday afternoon to early Monday morning, Sept. 26 over Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union.
Meanwhile, light to heavy rains may prevail over the northern portion of Aurora, Pangasinan, and Cagayan Valley.
“Under these conditions, isolated to scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA warned.
Due to the southwest monsoon or “habagat” that is partly influenced by Karding, occasional rains are also possible beginning Sunday over most of Southern Luzon and Visayas, especially over the western sections, it added.
PAGASA said that tropical cyclone wind signals may be hoisted as early as Friday evening over the eastern portions of Northern and Central Luzon in anticipation of a strong breeze to near gale strength winds.
“Per latest track and intensity forecast, the most likely highest wind signal that will be hoisted is Wind Signal No. 2. However, the potential for hoisting a Wind Signal No.3 is not ruled out at this time,” PAGASA said.
