He is the first Filipino fashion designer to showcase at MQVFW
Fashion designer Oliver Tolentino showed what Filipino design talent is all about with his recent collection presented at the MQ Vienna Fashion Week 2022 (MQVFW) in Austria. Last Sept. 14, European fashion savants were able to witness his fall-winter 2023 collection—a celebration of vibrant hues, elegant silhouettes, and world-class Filipino talent—at the MuseumsQuartier, a famous locale in central Vienna.
Oliver has been known for championing local textiles through his design, and that design mission is present in his latest collection. Opening his 36-piece couture line is a gown made from a fabric mix of piña, abaca, water lily, and saluyot. True a representation of Filipino design heritage, the eco piece was covered with recycled beads and the skirt with hand-sewn petals of piña and abaca remnants.
His fashion display continued with a parade of pieces in bold blues, luxe gold and black combinations, rich purples and emeralds, bright yellows, and vivid reds. Adding textures and flair to his designs were delicate beading, Swarovski embellishments, and fringes. While other design elements such as strong shoulder accents, flowing opera jackets, and voluminous tulle made the collection a truly dramatic sight to behold.
Oliver included several pantsuits, including a black and gold floral lamé print with a see-through horsehair detachable wraparound skirt, as well as a red embroidered pantsuit with a beaded bustier. He also showed two men’s tuxedo jackets, an emerald brocade lamé coat and a purple plaid Thai silk coat.
Philippine ambassador Irene Natividad sat front row, and luxury coffee table magazine book Aurum 999,9 MagBook sponsored Oliver’s solo show. Check out his collection below:
