Small but terrible, version 3.2: Kingston XS2000 external SSD is the new mighty mite of portable SSDs

Small but terrible, as a phrase, is so out of date. Kingston, however, updated this line with the offering of the Kingston XS2000 external SSD.

Kingston’s XS2000 external solid-state drive is small to fit any tiny-sized pockets, even slipping fine and easy into the coins pouch of your jeans. To be exact, this portable piece of new technology lists as its dimensions 69.54 × 32.58 × 13.5mm and hardly tips the scale at 28.9 grams.

The Kingston XS2000 portable is made of both plastic and metal, water and dust resistant, sports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 ports and a purchased box also gives you a short USB-C cable and a black rubber sleeve.

Kingston announced on its initial reveal that the XS2000 cater to students wanting to carry their important documents as well as assignments anywhere and everywhere. Oh, and this nifty device should also appeal to career persons with its promise of lightning-fast transfer speeds up to 2,000MB/s.

The XS2000 offers remarkable performance and capacities up to 2TB to offload and edit high-res images, 8K videos and large documents in a flash, transferring up to 400 HD photos per second, or taking less than 30 seconds to transfer a 1-hour 4K video, making any location an instant studio workspace. Aside from it  as a highly capable external SSD for backing up memories, the XS2000 connects with USB Type-C allowing content creators to easily store and access their files anywhere on a PC or mobile device.

We did try banging it around the TechNews lab with at least two persons taking turns, and all agreed the Kingston XS2000 is fast, both at reading and writing data, lives up to the true meaning of portability, and easy to tote anywhere because of its IP55 certification (water and dust resistant).

With its Silicon Motion SM2320 NAND controller, it can reach speeds of up to 2,000 MBps when reading or writing data sequentially.

And we finished this piece fast and easy, because we're quite happy with the Kingston XS2000 1TB we tested here.

The XS2000 is made available by Kingston in three capacity variants: 500GB, 1TB and 2TB.
