DPWH starts construction of PUP's new 9-storey main building

The construction of a nine-storey main academic building of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Main Campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila has already started, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

DPWH Sec. Manuel Bonoan said the building will replace the six-storey old building being used up to now by faculties and students and will accommodate the growing student population.

Bonoan said the project will be implemented by the DPWH National Capital Region (DPWH-NCR) under Director Nomer Abel P. Canlas.

Canlas said they prioritized building school facilities in Metro Manila to address the shortage of classrooms and learning facilities in government-funded universities.

“We are as excited as the students in the reopening of schools and return of in-person classes, and one of the ways we are welcoming back our Iskolar ng Bayan is by providing them a bigger, better learning environment,” Canlas said.

The ceremonial groundbreaking was graced by DPWH Assistant Secretary Antonio V. Molano, together with PUP officials and faculty led by University President Manuel M. Muhi and Executive Vice President Alberto C. Guillo.

Phase 1 will start with the North Wing, with a funding allocation of P187.3 million, and is estimated to be completed in 12 months.
