Three Senate panels OK bill postponing December 2022 barangay, SK elections

Three Senate committees have submitted their recommendation to the Senate plenary session reseting the December 2022 barangay and Sangguiniang Kabataan (SK) elections for another year.

The three committees--on electoral reforms and people’s participation, on local government and on finance--recommended that the rescheduled elections be held on the second Monday of December 2023.

The Senate electoral reforms committee is chaired by Senator Imee Marcos.

The Senate substitute bill, number 1306, states that those to be elected in December, 2023 shall assume their office on Jan. 1, 2024.

The current barangay and SK officials shall, thus, continue to hold office as their tenure would be extended until Dec. 31, 2023.

The next barangay and SK elections would also be reset up to the second Monday of May 2026. From thereon, the elections would be held every three years.

The three committees asked the Commission on Audit (COA) to report to Congress how much the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has already spent in the preparation for the scheduled December 5, 2022 barangay and SK elections.
