As prices of basic commodities continue to rise, families in Bulacan have started growing their own food in their backyards.

This was learned by Manila Bulletin from Francisco Fernando of Sitio Gulod, Barangay San Vicente, Sta Maria, Bulacan on Tuesday, Sept. 13. He said no one goes hungry if everyone will work hard, especially those who have a vacant lot wherein they can plant their own vegetables.
Fernando said that through backyard farming, one can grow organic food instead of buying them from the stores.
In the village of San Vicente, more families are beginning to reap the benefits of backyard farming.
Fernando said he devoted 400 square meters of his property to mixed livelihoods like raising goats, ducks, geese, turkeys, and chickens.
"In other areas of the land, we have different kinds of fruits and vegetables like papaya, atis, banana, pomelo, root crops, lemon, okra, beans, kangkong, and alugbati, and small ponds of Tilapia fish and Hito (catfish)," he added.
Fernando said he is able to sell the organic produce from his backyard garden to augment his family's income.
