Parañaque City Mayor Eric Olivarez led on Wednesday, Sept. 7, the groundbreaking for the construction of a recycling facility that will collect plastic waste and turn them into ecobricks.
Olivarez said the plastic recycling facility will be built in partnership with Mondelez International, Green Antz, and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).
He said the facility aims to provide livelihood to Paraqueños and to end the problem on plastic garbage.
The mayor said the facility is located within the city’s waste collection area wherein the plastic materials collected from homes and establishments are being segregated.
Olivarez explained that using the technology created by Green Antz Builders, the plastic trash is shredded and entombed together with cement to create ecobricks shaped like hollow blocks.
He said the finished products will be sold by the facility to anyone wishing to use sustainable building materials in their homes or offices.
The mayor said the proceeds will be used to pay the salaries of the facility workers who are residents of Parañaque.
“We are thankful to be chosen as the site for this facility. Sustainability for clean and green communities is a priority of our government and we are grateful to be working with like-minded organizations in achieving this goal. This site supports our existing efforts of creating a better city four our residents,” Olivarez said.
City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) head Mark Allen Besa said their office is a willing partner of the facility since it will help make the city clean and provide livelihood opportunities to residents.
