Mayor Sandoval vows to resolve removal of CMU from CHED UniFast program

Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval has vowed to resolve the removal of the City of Malabon University (CMU) from the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFast) program

She made her promise during the flag ceremony at the Malabon City Hall on Monday, Sept. 5.

After the meeting of CHED Chairperson J. Prospero E. de Vera III, Sandoval, and CMU faculty members on Friday, Sept. 2, it was confirmed that the CMU was removed from the program.

"Noong nakaraang linggo, ipinahayag ng CHED ang masamang balita hinggil sa pagkakatanggal ng CMU sa listahan ng mga benepisyaryo ng programang CHED UniFast, dahil sa hindi pagsusumite ng mga rekisitos ng nakaraang administrasyon sa nakalipas na tatlo't kalahating taon (Last week, CHED broke the bad news regarding the removal of CMU from the list of beneficiaries of the CHED UniFast program due to non-submission of requirements by the previous administration for the past three and a half years)," the mayor said.

Removing the CMU from the CHED UniFast will mean thousands of its students have to pay tuition.

Mayor Sandoval said she would hold the previous administration accountable for its negligence in submitting the formal requirements to the CHED.

"Nakakalungkot po na umabot tayo sa puntong ito, na ng dahil sa kapabayaan at hindi pagsasaayos ng mga kinakailangang i-sumite sa CHED noong mga nakaraang taon, libo-libong magulang at mag-aaral ng City of Malabon University (CMU) ang mapipilitang magbayad ng matrikula na dapat sana’y libre (It is unfortunate that we have reached this point, that due to the negligence and failure to submit the required documents to CHED in the past years, thousands of parents and students of the City of Malabon University (CMU) will be forced to pay tuition that should have been free)," the mayor said on her Facebook post.

She also said she would not allow the students to suffer because of this negligence.

Students of CMU also raised a petition to support the city mayor in dealing with and resolving the problem.

The petition also expresses appreciation to the city mayor, as the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of CMU, for becoming a leader and partner in dealing with the issues in the university.

UniFast is an attached agency of CHED and the primary implementer of the Free Higher Education (FHE) and the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) program of the national government.

Under the UniFast program, the government provides subsidies to the universities that would let the students acquire free education. (Diann Ivy Calucin)
