The event, held at the J. dela Peña Covered Court, was spearheaded by the Marikina City Health Office (CHO) in cooperation with the Marikina Gender and Development Office (GADO).

The congress aimed to promote and encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies.

Experts from the Arugan Breastfeeding Organization and the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (ARMMC) shared their knowledge with the mothers, informing and teaching them about the importance, benefits, and proper ways of breastfeeding.

Marikina City District 1 Rep. Marjorie Ann "Maan" Teodoro, also a breastfeeding advocate, graced the event and gave hygiene kits to the participants.

Teodoro shared her experiences with breastfeeding, particularly on the importance of the mother's nutrition, and overall health. She advised mothers to steer clear from vices such as smoking.

Even if solely breastfeeding will not guarantee the immunity of children to viruses, Teodoro said breast milk may still provide "added protection" for babies because of their nutritional benefits.

She added that there are establishments such as malls that have safe and dedicated breastfeeding stations.

"Ang pagpapasuso ay nagpapakita ng kalakasan ng isang babae bilang isang ina (Breastfeeding shows the strength of a woman as a mother)," said the Marikina Gender and Development (GAD) sector in a social media post.

"Maliban sa maraming benepisyong pangkalusugan at pagpapatibay ng samahan nila ng kaniyang sanggol, ito rin ay nakakatulong upang mapangalagaan ng babae ang kaniyang sarili at kaniyang pamilya (Aside from providing health benefits and developing the bond of a mother with her child, also helps women take care of themselves and their families)," they added.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "breast milk is the ideal food for infants."

It is cited for providing sufficient energy and nutrients to newborn babies that are needed in their first six months of life.

Breast milk is "safe and clean," added the WHO, and contains antibodies that can protect infants from common early illnesses.

Even amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department of Health (DOH) urged mothers to continue breastfeeding their infant children.

It remains to be the "most healthy, efficient, and environmentally-sustainable action of mothers for children," the DOH said in a joint media release with the WHO and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in August 2020.
