Teachers can get compensation for work-related health problems, DOLE says

Teachers from the public and private sectors can avail of the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP) if they fail to report for work due to job-related sicknesses, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

In a statement, DOLE said the compensation is under the program of the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC).

"Due to inclement weather brought by tropical storm 'Florita' these past few days, the ECC wants to value the sacrifices of teachers who braved the floods and heavy rains just to be able to perform their duties with the full re-implementation of in-person classes today (Aug. 30)," the statement read.

The ECC is a quasi-judicial corporate entity attached to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), tasked by the government to provide compensation packages to public and private employees or even their dependents in the event of work-related sickness, injury, or death.

Under the Amended Rules on Employees’ Compensation of the Labor Code of the Philippines, employees of both the public and private sectors are entitled to receive benefits and services under the ECP in the event of work-related sickness, injury, or death.

Private sector workers can avail of compensation from the Social Security System (SSS), except for the self-employed workers.

For the government employees including government officials who are receiving regular salaries; uniformed personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) will be compensated under the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).

According to ECC, the coverage in the program starts on the first day of workers’ employment.
