PNP buys P969M worth of guns, vehicles

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has acquired new guns and vehicles in a bid to further improve its operational capability.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr. said they spent P969 million for the guns, vehicles and office equipment--the fund was sourced from what was left from the police's budget for the Capability Enhancement Programs for the year 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020 and from the 2021 budget.

Those procured were 10 units 4x2 patrol jeeps; 36 units 4x4 personnel carriers; 8,358 units 9mm striker-fired pistols; 8,500 units 5.56mm basic assault rifles; 34 units 7.62mm light machine guns; 4,900 units 5.56mm basic assault rifles; 884 units tablet computer; and 2,005 units enhance combat helmets.

“As we continue to mobilize our police units through operational plans, strategic measures and other crime prevention and solution initiatives, I would like to note that it is also important to continuously upgrade our equipment to further strengthen our anti-criminality campaign and other field operation strategies against illegal drugs, criminality, insurgency and terrorism," Azurin said.

Azurin said that new vehicles and tablet computers will be distributed to different municipal police stations across the country, while the firearms will be issued to PNP recruits, PNPA cadets, PNP Maritime Group and Regional Mobile forces and battalion.

"By boosting agency’s operational readiness through meeting logistical needs will immensely improve every PNP unit’s performance in securing peace and order in the country," said Azurin.
