Caloocan LGU distributes rice assistance to PWDs

Caloocan City’s Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) started the distribution of rice assistance to persons with disabilities (PWDs) on Thursday, Aug. 25.

The program aims to provide five kilos of rice to a total of 30,792 registered PWDs in the city.

According to PDAO, more than 1,000 PWDs already received rice assistance on Aug. 25.

It said the rice distribution in barangays will run until September 2022.

Despite the rice shortage, the Caloocan City government said that activities such as rice assistance are part of its recovery program, focusing on economic relief, job opportunities, and aid from the local government.

“Ang direktiba po sa atin, pagtuunan ng pansin ang mga sektor na higit na nangangailangan kaya’t sinisikap ng PDAO matulungan ang mga PWD nating mga kababayan (The directive to us is to focus on the sectors that are most in need, so PDAO is trying to help our PWDs) ,” PDAO Officer-in-charge Maria Dainty Abelardo said.

She also said the activity is aligned with Mayor Along’s directive to help vulnerable sectors amid the crisis.

“Ang nais natin, maramdaman ng mga taga-Caloocan, lalo na ng mga sektor na lubos na naapektuhan ng pandemya, na may gobyernong kakalinga sa kanila, (We want locals of Caloocan, especially the sectors that have been greatly affected by the pandemic, to feel that there is a government that will take care of them)” Mayor Along said.

Last July, Caloocan City’s Department Social Welfare Development (DSWD) also distributed five kilos of rice to registered solo parents in the city.

PWDs in Caloocan can avail of value-added tax (VAT)-free purchases of certain goods and services from all establishments as mandated under R.A. 10754 and are entitled to at least twenty percent (20%) discount, including access to financial and medical assistance. (Diann Ivy Calucin)
