Mayor Zamora orders regular patrols, coordination with schools amid string of kidnappings

The San Juan City local government assured the public, particularly parents of students in the city, that all schools operating in San Juan are in close coordination with law enforcement agencies and barangay officials amid the string of kidnappings being reported in Metro Manila.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora made the statement following the return of 100 percent face-to-face classes in all public schools in the city, joining Makati City as the first local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila to transition ahead of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) order to implement the teaching method by November.

"Ang San Juan po ay nanatiling may pinakamababang bilang ng kaso ng krimen sa buong Metro Manila (San Juan remains as the city with the lowest number of reported crimes in Metro Manila). We are the city with the lowest crime rate. And we are very proud of our San Juan police, and of course, our augmentation from the barangays. It is a concerted effort from the different sectors of San Juan. Kaya, so far, wala pa naman kaming nararanasan pang insidente ng kidnapping. Ganunpaman, sisiguraduhin natin na ang ating kapulisan ay mag-iikot araw-araw kaugnay sa pagbubukas ng klase (So far, we have yet to experience any incident of kidnapping. But despite this, we still ensure that our police are mobilized and conducting regular patrols especially with the re-opening of classes)," Zamora said in an interview with SMNI.

He explained that all security guards in all schools in San Juan are properly trained to respond to any incident and that each school has its own incident command center connected to all peace and order entities in the city.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, Philippine National Police (PNP) Spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo dismissed rumors that a serial killer or a group of people in a white van could be behind the string of kidnappings and killings in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

“If we look into the circumstances sa mga sunod-sunod na pagkaka-discover ng cadavers and reported kidnappings ay wala tayong nakikita na serial killer dito (If we look into the circumstances in the discovery of cadavers and reported kidnappings, we do not see any probability that a serial killer is involved)," Fajardo said in an interview with GMA.

Meanwhile, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos said that the police should increase their visibility and assured parents that all concerned agencies are doing their best to ensure the safety of their children.
