First day of classes ‘orderly and peaceful’ so far --- DepEd

Citing reports from the field offices, the Department of Education (DepEd) said that the first day of classes in public schools on Monday, Aug. 22, has been “orderly and peaceful” so far.

DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa told reporters in a Viber message that as of 9:20 am, school opening in most public schools nationwide has been generally smooth.

“Base po sa mga updates ng ating mga Regional Directors, maayos at mapayapa po ang pagbabalik Eskwela ng ating mga learners (Based on the updates of our Regional Directors, the return of our learners to school is smooth and peaceful),” Poa said.

Classes in public schools nationwide started on Monday. This school year saw the return of students to schools after two years as DepEd allowed the implementation of face-to-face classes amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Wala pa pong nakakarating sa amin na untoward incidents (No reports of untoward incidents have reached us yet),” Poa said based on the reports from the field.

Based on the latest data of DepEd, there are 28,035,042 enrolled learners in public and private schools nationwide as of 7 a.m. today.

Of this number, 23,905, 615 learners were recorded from the Quick Count which started on July 25 and ends on Aug. 22.

The remaining 4,129,427 learners were recorded from the Early Registration held from March to April 2022.

“There might have duplicates between Early Registration and Quick Counts,” DepEd said. “However, the system will detect in the beginning of school year,” it added.

DepEd wanted 28.6 million learners to enroll for this SY 2022-2023.

“Patuloy po kaming naka-monitor sa ating mga paaralan (We continue to monitor our schools),” he added.

DepEd said that concerns related to the school opening may be relayed to the “Oplan Balik Eskwela” Public Assistance Command Center (OBE-PACC).

As of Aug. 22, 9 a.m., the OBE-PACC in Bulwagan ng Karungan at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City has received a total of 26 queries, requests, complaints, and a suggestion.

Most of these reported concerns in OBE-PACC include school policy and operations, other matters, enrollment concerns, finance, learning continuity plan, programs and projects, and questions related to Senior High School (SHS).

Based on initial reports from DepEd, the first day of classes was orderly in Dinalupihan Elementary School in Bataan.

The first day of classes started with a flag ceremony. After this, the teachers guided the learners to their respective classrooms.

Teachers and other non-teaching staff ensured that health and safety protocols were observed such as undergoing body temperature checks and maintaining social distancing.

Both school personnel and learners were seen wearing face masks which is mandatory for all those who will attend in-person classes.

Dinalupihan ES has 61 teachers and 1,900 learners. The school implements five days of in-person classes for students in Grades 1 to 6.

Later, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte is scheduled to lead the 2022 National School Opening Day Program (NSODP).

As reported by DepEd, the school opening day in Sucat Elementary School, Lakeview Integrated School, and Muntinlupa Business High School-Annex was also orderly.

The school reopening was also peaceful in Bagong Barrio Elementary School in Caloocan City and Cupang Elementary School in Muntinlupa City, DepEd said.
