PH spikers play Vietnam in AVC Cup opener

The Philippines gears up to take on Vietnam when the Asian Volleyball Confederation for Women fires off Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Philippine women's team will rely on its tried and tested chemistry with starters Jia de Guzman, Tots Carlos, Ced Domingo, Jema Galanza, Jeanette Panaga and Michele Gumabao leading the way. (Mark Balmores)

A good start is what the national team needs especially as it faces a young crew looking to gain experience in their 7 p.m. tussle.

Aside from skipper Alyssa Valdez, who was ruled out due to dengue and was replaced by outside spiker Rizza Mandapat during the preliminary inquiry Friday, Aug. 19, the hosts will also be without middle blocker Risa Sato, will also miss the tournament due to health issues. Rookie Lorie Bernardo took over her position.

With the core of newly crowned Premier Volleyball League champion Creamline, the Philippines will rely on its tried and tested chemistry with starters Jia de Guzman, Tots Carlos, Ced Domingo, Jema Galanza, Jeanette Panaga and Michele Gumabao leading the way.

“We’re one team, we’re one professional team and we’ve been selected after winning the championship in our local tournament. So I think we’re already gelled and know each other, and that’s our greatest advantage coming into this tournament,” said Gumabao.

Despite missing their strong suit, Gumabao said their only challenge is adjusting mentally following the developments happening with the team.

“No matter what (the situation is), we have been given an opportunity. Whoever we have on the court, we will do our best,” said Gumabao.

Assistant coach Karlo Santos said their team system would be their best bet to attempt a better finish.
