Magnitude 4.4 quake jolts Leyte province — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 4.4-magnitude earthquake in Leyte province Saturday morning, Aug. 13.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 13 kilometers (km) northwest of Merida, Leyte at 6:49 a.m., with a depth of 10 km.

It was felt at Intensity IV as a “moderately strong” tremor in Merida, Ormoc City, and Isabel in Leyte.

Palompon, Matag-ob, Villaba, and Kananga in Leyte felt the quake at Intensity III (weak).

Meanwhile, Albuera, Capoocan, Carigara, and Tabango in Leyte felt it at Intensity II (slightly felt).

It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Calubian, Leyte.

Phivolcs noted that the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
