The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Maguindanao province Saturday afternoon, Aug. 13.
It was initially measured as a magnitude 5.8 quake but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 5.9.
Phivolcs said the quake struck 31 kilometers (km) southwest of the municipality of Datu Blah T. Sinsuat in Maguindanao at 2:25 p.m.
The earthquake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Datu Blah Sinsuat, South Upi and Upi in Maguindanao; Cotabato City; and Esperanza, Lebak, Palimbang, Kalamansig, Sen. Ninoy Aquino and Bagumbayan in Sultan Kudarat.
Meanwhile, it was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Zamboanga City; Pagadian City; Isabela City, Basilan; Antipas, Alamada, Tulunan, Pigcawayan, Kabacan and Banisilan in Cotabato province; Koronadal City, Tupi, Polomolok, Santo Niño, Surallah, Tampakan and Banga in South Cotabato; Kiamba and Maitum in Sarangani; Lutayan and Isulan in Sultan Kudarat; and Datu Odin Sinsuat and Sultan Kudarat in Maguindanao.
Ozamiz City; M'lang, Makilala and Tantangan in Cotabato; Norala, South Cotabato; Pres. Quirino and Columbio in Sultan Kudarat; Maasim, Sarangani; Pitogo and Labangan in Zamboanga del Sur; Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte; and Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay felt the tremor at Intensity II (slightly felt).
It was also felt at Intensity II (slightly felt) in Dipolog City; Cagayan de Oro City; Davao City; Kidapawan City; El Salvador City; Aleosan, Cotabato; Don Carlos, Cabanglasan and Valencia City in Bukidnon; Malapatan and Malungon in Sarangani; Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat; Leon B. Postigo, Siayan, Sindangan, Gutalac and Tampilisan in Zamboanga del Norte; Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay; and Tubod, Lenamon, Balo-i, Kauswagan, Bacolod, Maigo, Lala, Kapatagan and Iligan City in Lanao del Norte.
It was felt at Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Dapitan City; Malitbog and Libona in Bukidnon; and Initao, Misamis Oriental.
Phivolcs said the earthquake may have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructures.
It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
