Explore the beauty of Spanish movies for free at this film festival

Película Spanish Film Festival is set to return to the big screens

Spain is heading to Asia as Película Spanish Film Festival holds its 21st edition this coming October. After two years of virtual celebrations, the movie fest goes back to face-to-face screenings, bringing the best of Spanish cinema to Manila, Malaysia, and Australia. 

Opening the festival here in the Philippines is Fernando León de Aranoa’s 2021 comedy film “El Buen Patrón.” The laughs continue with the festival’s comedy line-up that includes Dani de la Orden’s “El test” and Martín Cuervo’s “Con quién viajas.” Also part of its 20-movie roster are films “A las mujeres de España. María Lejárraga” (2022) a documentary by Laura Hojman, drama flick “Maixabel” by Icíar Bollaín, or “El olvido que seremos” by Fernando Trueba, and thriller “La hija” by Manuel Martín Cuenca.

Apart from the Spanish movies, the festival will also feature Latin American films such as the Colombian  documentary “Jinetes del Paraíso” by Talia Osorio Cardona, the Panamenian comedy “Algo azul” by Mariel García Spooner, and Spanish-Argentinean comedy “Competencia oficial” directed in 2021 by Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, featuring Penélope Cruz, Antonio  Banderas, and Oscar Martínez.  

Película Spanish Film Festival 2022 is an initiative of Instituto Cervantes in Manila and Sydney, the Embassies of Spain in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Australia, and the AECID, in collaboration with the Film Development  Council of the Philippines, ICAA, the Embassy of Colombia in the Philippines, the Embassy of Panama in the Philippines, the UP Film Institute, the University of the Philippines, and the Intramuros Administration. 

It will take place from Oct. 5 to 16, Película Spanish Film Festival 2022 will screen 20 movies in three venues around Metro-Manila: at Shangri-La Plaza, Cine Adarna at UP Diliman, and at Instituto Cervantes in Intramuros.  

All the movies are in Spanish (or their original language) with English subtitles. For updates on the festival, visit Instituto Cervantes’ Facebook page.
