Sotto hails new law that separates heinous crime offenders from other prisoners
Former Senate President Vicente Sotto III said Wednesday, Aug. 4 that his proposal for the establishment of a separate facility for heinous crime offenders has become a reality in Republic Act (RA) 7659, or the Separate Facility for Heinous Crimes Inmates Act.
Because of this, according to Sotto, he is confident that people would continue to be safe in the streets and sleep more soundly.
"People would know that the government has taken the extra mile to make sure that high-profile and maximum security convicts are kept behind bars and deprived of the opportunity to continue committing crimes even while in detention,’’ he pointed out.
The former Senate chief explained that the law would decongest the perennially overcrowded National Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa.
‘’With the facility located in an isolated location, this will ensure that these persons deprived of liberty will not be able to escape detention and cut their prison terms. We have heard of numerous news about high-profile and maximum-security prisoners escaping from the National Bilibid Prison,’’ he stressed.
"This is the government's response to this,’’ he said.
‘’I laud Malacañang for seeing the significance of this measure, which I was the principal author of the Senate version. Sama-sama, siguruhin natin ang kaligtasan ng ating mga pamilya at ng ating komunidad (Together, we will ensure the safety of our family and community),’’ he added.
