PH airline firms monitor Taiwan aviation situation

Local airline companies are now monitoring the situation in Taipei after they received a notice from Taiwan aviation authorities on the closure of their airport from Aug. 4-7.

Cielo Villaluna, spokesperson of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) said the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) they received states that the Taiwan airspace will be closed from 12 noon on Aug. 4 to 12 noon of Aug. 7.

"We are closely monitoring the situation in Taiwan. Our flight to and from Taipei today August 4 - PR890/892 - operated as scheduled utilizing a designated cleared flight routing. Philippine Airlines assures that regular coordination is being carried out with Taiwan authorities," said Villaluna.

PAL flights to and from Taiwan are every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

For its part, the Cebu Pacific said it is currently accommodating essential travel between Manila and Taipei, Taiwan on a once weekly flight, or every Wednesday.

"We are monitoring the situation but there are no changes in our network as of now," Cebu Pacific said in a statement.

The closure is part of the security measures after China initiated a large-scale military drill near Taiwan in an apparent show of force following the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

China has been maintaining that Taiwan is part of China.
