Former Lamitan City, Basilan Mayor Rose Furigay laid to rest

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Former Lamitan City, Basilan Mayor Rose Furigay was laid to rest Wednesday, August 3, in Lamitan.

The funeral was attended by more than 1,000 Lamitan residents.

The ceremonies started early in the morning with the viewing of her remains and necrological rites at the Lamitan City gym.

The casket was then transferred to the St. Peter the Apostle Parish Church where a funeral mass was officiated by Lamitan Bishop Leo Dalmao.

Furigay was laid to rest in a family-owned property in Barangay Limo-ok.

Lamitan Mayor Roderick Furigay thanked everyone who condoled with his family which included Basilan officials, local government personnel, supporters, and residents.

Police estimated the crowd to be more 1,000.

Furigay’s daughter, Kelsey, honored her mother: “I am strong because I was raised by a strong woman.”

Rose, together with her assistant Victor Capistrano and Ateneo de Manila University guard Jeneven Bandiola, were killed in a gun attack by Dr. Chao Tiao-Yumol last July 24 during the commencement rites for law graduates at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City.
