Senators honor former Pres. Ramos

Senators on Monday filed a resolution expressing the legislative body's sincere condolences and profound sympathy with the Filipino people and the family and loved ones of former President Fidel V. Ramos who died on Sunday.

Senate President Migz Zubiri, Majority Floor Leader Sen. Joel Villanueva, Sen. Bong Revilla and Sen. Raffy Tulfo were among those who sponsored various senate resolutions pertaining to the late leader's death.

Among Ramos' credentials cited in Villanueva's resolution was his participation in the Philippine Civic Action Group as a chief of staff during the Vietnam War as well as his appointment by former President Corazon Aquino as the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 1986 to 1988 and as the secretary of the Department of National Defense from 1988 to 1991.

Being elected as the 12th President of the Philippines, Ramos "spearheaded the economic recovery of the country and implemented a comprehensive Social Reform Agenda that aimed to address and implement effective interventions," Villanueva also said.

"President Ramos was also a key figure in the peace accord between the government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front," he added.

Meanwhile, Sen. Risa Hontiveros called Ramos as "a major game-changer during the People Power Revolution."

"Even then, his unexpected courage was a force of nature, encouraging many other longer-standing freedom fighters," Hontiveros also said.

Sen. Sonny Angara said Ramos "was a practitioner of 'big tent politics,' while respecting the diversity in opinions. The late leader did not also oppress the opposition and instead curtailed constructive criticisms, he added.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said Ramos, "a military man by training and an engineer and a builder by background, brought to the presidency a different view of how problems should be dealt with, overcoming them in the most pragmatic, cost-effective, and fastest way."

Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, in a Facebook post, also paid tribute to the late President by uploading a photo of him, Ramos and former President Duterte.

"We thank him for serving our country and for the sacrifices he and his family offered so that Filipinos may have a safer and more comfortable life," Cayetano said in his post.
