8 die as dump truck buries motorcycle, SUV with sand in Batangas road crash

NASUGBU, Batangas – Eight persons were killed after a dump truck buried a motorcycle and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with sand in a road crash before dawn here Monday, August 1.

Local police said the dump truck driven by Bren Bryan Constantino, 28, with a crew of two helpers, lost its brakes while negotiating the national highway in Barangay Aga at 4:45 a.m.

The dump truck crashed into a fruit stall on the left side shoulder of the road and fell on its side, hitting and burying the motorcycle and SUV driven by Eduard Ferrer and Hipolito Sangalang, respectively, on the opposite lane.

Ferrer and the seven occupants of the SUV died on the spot due to severe injuries.

Police identified five passengers of the SUV as Catherine Joy Ampo, Evelyn Santos, Amado Santos, Jayvee Santos, and Jerson Santos. The sixth fatality was a baby whose name was not disclosed by the police.

They are all residents of Barangay Sta. Ana, Calatagan, Batangas.

Their bodies were retrieved by responding rescuers and the police.

Constantino and companions sustained minor injuries.

Lawmen are investigating accident. Constantino is now under the custody of the Nasugbu police.
