Phivolcs logs close to 1,500 aftershocks after powerful Abra quake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has so far recorded 1,459 aftershocks following the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Tayum, Abra on July 27.

As of 6 p.m., Sunday, July 30, Phivolcs had detected 1,459 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 5.0.

Of the recorded earthquakes, Phivolcs had plotted 451 earthquakes close to the epicenter of the main shock in Tayum, Abra.

However, only 38 of these tremors were felt.

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck northwestern Luzon on July 27 is the strongest inland quake since the 6.6-magnitude Masbate quake in August 2020, said Science and Technology OIC Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.

Solidum, in a press conference on July 27, had advised the public to remain vigilant, as aftershocks may occur in the next few days or weeks.

“But with time, the number decreases. Sometimes intermittently, sometimes the magnitude is higher than the previous one, that’s normal. But the tendency is, it would decrease with time,” he said.
