Lav Diaz to return to Venice Film Festival

Lav Diaz's "Kapag Wala Na Ang Mga Alon (When The Waves Are Gone),” starring John Lloyd Cruz, is set to screen at the 79th Venice Film Festival.

Organizers announced this in a Facebook post recently, relating it will form part of the festival's out of competition fiction section.

“Kapag Wala na ang mga Alon” follows the story of Lt. Hermes Papauran, as played by John Lloyd.

One of the best investigators in the country, Lt. Papauran is stressed, troubled, bearing witness to the former administration’s bloody anti-drug campaign, leading to him developing severe psoriasis.

The film, produced by Epicmedia and Sine Olivia Pilipinas, among others, also stars Ronnie Lazaro, Shamaine Buencamino and DM Boongaling.

It is the latest film collaboration between Lav and John Lloyd following “Isang Salaysay ng Karahasang Pilipino,” “Historya ni Ha” and “Ang Babaeng Humayo.”

It also marks Diaz’s return to the Venice Film Festival, after winning the Orizzonti Award for Best Director for his film “Lahi, Hayop (Genus Pan)” in 2020.

The 79th Venice Film Festival will be held at Venice Lido from Aug. 31 to Sept. 10.
