The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said Tuesday, July 26, that the shooting incident at Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) is now considered a “closed case” after multiple criminal cases were filed against the suspect.
Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol, the gunman who killed former Lamitan Mayor Rosita "Rose" Furigay and two others during the graduation of law students at ADMU on Sunday, July 24, was charged for violation of Republic Act 10883 (The Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016), RA 10591 (The Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition), and malicious mischief.
The cases filed by the QCPD are on top of the three counts of murder and a frustrated murder filed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office on Monday evening, July 25.
QCPD director Brig. Gen. Remus Medina said that they considered the case “closed” after they filed the appropriate cases against the suspect based on their investigation and the evidences presented.
The suspect was also immediately arrested and is under police custody.
Furigay, her executive assistant Victor Capistrano, and ADMU security guard Jeneven Bandiala were shot dead by Yumol during the Ateneo Law School graduation rites last Sunday.
The former mayor's daughter, Hannah, one of the graduates, was also wounded and is now recovering in the hospital.
Police said Yumol was able to enter the campus through a Grab vehicle. He merged with the crowd before firing shot towards the former mayor at the lobby of the Arete building.
It added that Yumol ran through the gate where Bandiala was stationed. The security guard was also shot after he tried to prevent the suspect from escaping.
Police said that the charges were filed based on investigation findings that Yumol forcibly took a yellow Honda Civic from one Mr. Palma, which he used as his getaway car. He pointed his gun at the owner of the vehicle to threaten him.
According to police report, barangay officials tried to block the suspect by placing metal barriers along Fabian dela Rosa Street, but Yumol was able to maneuver the stolen vehicle and fire shots to scare the people. He also bumped through various objects and other vehicles in the area.
The QCPD said that a man reported to them that the suspect left the stolen vehicle near a gas station at the corner of Lauan Street and Aurora Boulevard.
Yumol also tried to ride a tricycle but the driver rejected him so he rode a mini bus going to Cogeo, Rizal.
The QCPD conducted a dragnet operation which led to his arrest on Aurora Boulevard in Brgy. Quirino 3-A, Quezon City.
Police said the Furigay family had filed 76 cyber libel cases against Yumol.
Seized from Yumol were a 9mm pistol, a .45-caliber pistol, bullets, a driver's license registered under a different name, and a pouch with P3,427.
According to the police, the 9mm pistol was registered under Yumol’s name, but the .45-caliber gun was listed under First Lt. Jeremy Aquino, executive officer of the 12th Mechanized Company, 1st Mechanized Battalion Armscor Division of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The gun was reportedly lost in Buhanginan, Patikul, Sulu in November 2019, and the suspect claimed he was able to purchase it in the black market.
"Nakapag-file na po tayo ng kaukulang kaso laban sa suspect base sa results ng ating investigation, at hinihintay na lamang natin ang disposition ng piskalya. Sa ngayon, ang suspect ay naka-detain pa din sa QCPD CIDU detention facilities (We have already filed corresponding cases against the suspect based on the results of our investigation, and we are waiting for the disposition of the fiscal. For now, the suspect is still detained at the QCPD CIDU detention facilities)," Medina said.
