Cops file 3 counts of murder, other charges vs Ateneo gunman
The Philippine National Police (PNP) filed on Monday, July 25, three counts of murder against the medical doctor tagged in the shooting inside the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in Quezon City on Sunday.
PNP spokesperson Police Col. Jean Fajardo said that aside from murder charges, cases of frustrated murder and violation of Republic Act 10591 were also slapped against Chao Tiao Yumol before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office.
“The case of violation of RA 10591 was in connection with the use of a loose firearm in the commission of the crime,” said Fajardo.
Police Lt. Gen Vicente Danao, Jr., PNP officer-in-charge, said two firearms were seized from Yumol when he was arrested on his way to escape 30 minutes after the Ateneo shooting.
The incident resulted in the death of former Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay, her executive assistant Victor George Capistrano and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiala.
Furigay’s daughter Hannah, who was supposed to attend her graduation from the Ateneo Law School, was also wounded.
Fajardo said the Quezon City Police District also filed a case of violation of Republic Act 10883, or the new Anti-Carnapping Law and Malicious mischief.
The carnapping case was based on the testimony of the witnesses that Yumol stole a vehicle and used it to escape.
As the murder charges are non-bailable, Yumol is still under the custody of the QCPD at Camp Karingal.
