ILOILO CITY -- The Department of Health (DOH) reported that 318 new cases of three different Omicron sub-variants of Covid-19 have been detected in Western Visayas region.
The DOH specifically recorded new cases of the A.5; BA.4 kag BA.2.12.1 Omicron sub-variants in the region, which saw a spike in Covid-19 cases in the past two weeks.
In a mid-week press briefing, DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said that 309 out of the 816 new cases of BA.5 sub-variant were in Western Visayas region.
For the BA.4 sub-variant, seven out of the 42 new cases were recorded in Western Visayas.
For the BA.2.12.1 sub-variant, two out of the 52 cases were found in Western Visayas.
But Vergerie pointed out that many of those infected only have mild or moderate symptoms since the majority have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
As of July 21, there were 2,040 active cases of Covid-19. Most cases were found in the regional capital of Iloilo City with 612.
