Actor Ong Seong-wu tests positive for Covid-19 as Korea’s daily cases hit more than 70,000


Korean actor-idol Ong Seong-wu, former member of K-pop boy band Wanna One, has tested positive for Covid-19 as South Korea’s daily new cases hit more than 70,000.

The star’s condition was announced on his online fan cafe on July 21.

“On the 19th, artist Ong Seong-wu took preemptive measures due to his poor condition. Self-diagnosis kit tests and rapid antigen tests were conducted and the results were positive,” according to the announcement.

It added, “Currently, Ong Seong-wu has no symptoms other than a mild sore throat, and he has stopped all schedules.”

“In accordance with the guidelines of Covid-19 quarantine authorities, we will concentrate on self-isolation, treatment, and recovery. We ask for your understanding for causing concern to many people, and we will continue to prioritize the health of artists and staff,” it said.

For the third straight day, South Korea’s daily new Covid-19 hit above 70,000 due to the highly contagious BA.5 Omicron subvariant.

On July 21, a total of 71,170 new cases were recorded in South Korea from 76,402 on July 20 and 73,573 on July 19.

The BA.5 subvariant accounted for 52 percent of South Korea’s Covid-19 cases in the third week of July, Yonhap News reported.
