Get to know these actors with Filipino roots gracing Netflix’s new releases

There is no doubt that Filipinos have world-class talent. Many performance artists with Filipino roots have successfully demonstrated their singing and acting prowess, whether it is on stage, on TV, or in film. This time, a new batch of Filipino artists is making rounds internationally by appearing in Netflix’s newest titles. If you have been streaming some of its new releases, chances are you’ve already seen them.

Mark Paguio – ‘Spiderhead’

First on our list is Mark Paguio. He starred alongside Chris Hemsworth (as Steve Abnesti) and Miles Teller (as Jeff) in the 2022 American science fiction psychological thriller film “Spiderhead.” There he portrayed Mark Verlaine, Abnesti’s righthand man. 

Born in the Philippines, Mark moved to Melbourne at the age of four. There, he finished a performing arts degree at Monash University. He then continued his studies at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. Now 28, he has appeared in a number of TV series like “Bump” and “The Unusual Suspects” and the 2022 movie “Lonesome.”

MK xyz – ‘First Kill’

Netflix’s new series “First Kill” is about a supernatural tale Victoria Schwab’s short story. It follows a star-crossed romance between Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook), a secret vampire, and Calliope (Imani Lewis), a new student born to a family of monster hunters. The series also introduced Calliope’s best friend Tess Franklin, which is portrayed by MK xyz, who is of African American and Filipino heritage.

Makaila in real life, MK was raised in the US. Both her mom and dad were dancers, so it is natural for her to pursue a career in performing arts. She honed her performing skills by attending Northwest School of Arts in Charlotte, North Carolina. At age 15, she successfully released her first EP on her own. Her songs such as “One Time” and “Pass It” are available on Youtube and Spotify. Also, she loves lumpia!

Hunter Romanillos – ‘Stranger Things 4’

“Stranger Things 4” not only introduced fans to the show’s newest villain Vecna, but it also presented new bullies in town led by athlete Jason Carver (Mason Dy). Among the jock’s teammates is Chance, portrayed by Fil-Am actor Hunter Romanillos. One fan asked him on Instagram about his favorite scene to shoot in the series and he replied, “ town hall. Mason was incredible to watch work.”

Fairly a newbie in the entertainment scene, Hunter has yet to showcase his acting prowess in more shows and movies in the future. Apart from “Stranger Things 4,” he also appeared in “Dark Echoes” series and as an uncredited high school student extra in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” movie, according to IMDb.
