In the observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Holy Mass with the blessing and imposition of scapulars will be celebrated at the Manila Cathedral on Saturday, July 16.
In a Facebook post, the Manila Cathedral said the Mass will be held at 7:30 a.m. in Intramuros.
The vicaria image of the Our Lady from the Minor Basilica of San Sebastian will also visit the Cathedral and will stay until Sunday.
On the evening of Saturday, Manila Cathedral Rector Fr. Reginald Malicdem will celebrate the Fiesta Mass at the San Sebastian Church at 6 p.m.
According to the Archdiocese of Manila, the Feast of Our Lady of
Mount Carmel was instituted between 1376 and 1386 to celebrate the victory of the Carmelite order over
its enemies on obtaining the official seal of approval of its name and constitution from Pope Honorious III
on Jan. 30, 1226.
But the feast day was assigned
to July 16th because on that date in 1251, according to Carmelite traditions, the scapular given by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock.
The archdiocese said the apparition was officially approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587.
