The Department of Public Works and Highways had completed the rehabilitation of a drainage structure in Sampaloc, Manila, which it said, will protect local residents from flooding.
Sampaloc is home to a number of universities and commercial establishments. Unfortunately, the area is also known for perennial flooding during rainy season, causing heavy traffic, making commuting extra difficult, and leaving passengers, mostly students, stranded.
DPWH National Capital Region Director Nomer Abel P. Canlas said the project was funded with P92 million from the 2021 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
The completed project covers the construction of 803 lineal meters of reinforced concrete box culverts on different segments along E. Quintos Street, stretching from S.H. Loyola Street to Gerardo Tuazon Street, according to Canlas.
The improvement of drainage system utilized a series of 2.40 by 1.80 meter of reinforced concrete box culverts that is expected to significantly increase the capacity of Josefina-Lepanto and Lepanto-Gov. Forbes Drainage Mains to ensure smooth drain and flow of floodwaters in the event of heavy rainfall.
