The family of one of the two fatalities in the collapse of an elevator unit in Makati City on Friday, July 8, is calling for justice.
"Yung daddy ko is hindi pa din nya matanggap kasi mahal na mahal ng daddy ko yung kapatid ko, kaya yun, hindi pa din nya matanggap na wala na yung bunso kong kapatid (My father still cannot accept the death of my younger brother)," Melvin Linayao, older brother of Manuel Linayao, said in a report from ABS-CBN on Sunday, July 10.
He added that they still do not know how to explain the death of his brother to his wife and six-year-old child who will be coming home from Taiwan.
The older Linayao explained that while Concepcion-Otis Philippines, the elevator's contractor, has already fulfilled its promise to help their family, the management of Burgundy Corporation Tower where the accident happened has yet to coordinate with them.
"Sana mabigyan ng hustisya yung ano (pagkamatay) ng kapatid ko. Ano ba dahilan? Ano ba sanhi kung bakit nagkaganun? (I hope that justice will be served for the death of my brother. What was the reason for his death? Why did the incident happen?)," Melvin said.
In a report from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the incident occurred at around 3:46 a.m while Manuel and his team are replacing the old elevator unit in the building.
The elevator unit suddenly dropped from the 38th floor to the 6th floor at around 2:55 a.m., killing Manuel and Rey Miguel Gilera. Two other elevator installers were also hurt in the incident.
The authorities are still investigating the cause of the elevator unit's collapse.
