Go, grow, glow: DOH highlights importance of eating nutritious meals
The Department of Health (DOH) reminded the public of the importance of consuming nutritious food to maintain a healthy body.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire made the statement in observance of the National Nutrition Month. This is an annual campaign held every July to create greater awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos.
“Kaya naman ngayong July, alalahanin na kumain ng gulay at iba pang mga masusustansyang pagkain upang mabuo ang kinakailangang Go, Grow, and Glow food ng ating katawan (This July, remember to eat vegetables and other nutritious food to form the necessary Go, Grow, and Glow food that our body needs),” said Vergeire in a recent press briefing.
Based on the World Food Programme (WFP), Go food is "essential for energy, which is crucial for thinking, working, and fending off disease." Examples of Go food include rice and pasta.
Grow food helps in physical growth, the WFP said. This kind of food "rebuild your body when you are unwell or have an infection. They are often required in small amounts, but are essential to be consumed daily," it added. These include meat, fish, eggs, milk and other dairy products such as cheese and yogurt.
On the other hand, Glow food "make sure the body works well, help to protect the body from diseases and fight off illness. All foods have some vitamins and minerals, but colorful fruits and vegetables are generally rich in vitamins and antioxidants," the WFP said.
“Eating your Go, Grow, and Glow foods are essential to keep the body healthy,” said Vergeire.
“Apart from adhering to the minimum public health standards and getting vaccinated, a healthy body is our best defense against the virus,” she added.
