In the Philippines, instant noodles are arguably more than a guilty pleasure--it's a staple food for the poor.

For this reason, there will be a lot on eyes and ears on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and their expected findings on a local instant noodle brand that had been flagged by some European states over alleged presence of ethylene oxide--a chemical that is used as a pesticide.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the results of the FDA's investigation on the instant noodle brand would be known "in the coming days". Vergeire said exposure to ethylene oxide may cause headache, vomiting, loose bowel movement, difficulty in breathing, and fatigue.

The brand in question, Lucky Me!, has released a statement denying that its products were laced with the chemical.

The governments of Ireland, France,and Malta earlier issued a health warning against the brand in connection with alleged ethylene oxide content.

Elsewhere, in Malacañang, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has officially launched efforts to streamline the bureaucracy--which is exactly what he said he would do in his first days in office.

“In order to achieve simplicity, economy, and efficiency in the bureaucracy without effecting disruptions in internal management and general governance, the Administration shall streamline official processes and procedures by reorganizing the proper and the various attached agencies and offices by abolishing duplicated and overlapping official functions,’ Marcos wrote in his Executive Order (EO) No.1.

By virtue of EO No.1, the President ordered the abolition of the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) and the Office of the Cabinet Secretary.

Meanwhile, a subsequent directive, EO No.2 effectively reorganizes the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and its attached agencies to the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS).

The EO likewise abolishes the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson, an office that former President Rodrigo Duterte reconstituted after abolishing the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) through EO No. 111 on April 27, 2020, amid the government’s attempt to address the Covid-19 pandemic.
