Jerome Santos waxed hot with 36 points as he anchored a huge fourth-quarter onslaught for CEU to shake off a gritty AMA Online side,101-82, in the 2022 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup on Thursday, July 7.
After a back-and-forth affair in the first three quarters, CEU buckled down on the defensive end to force consecutive turnovers and power a blazing 18-3 run early in the payoff period. That proved to be the difference as the Scorpions erected a 22-point lead, 89-67, which they took care until the final buzzer.
Santos, who unloaded 12 of his total during the deciding fourth-quarter run, connected on four triples along with eight rebounds and six assists while Anjord Cabotaje added 11 points. Dave Bernabe was also solid down low for CEU, scattering nine points and 14 rebounds.
Only ahead by two, 55-53, midway through the third frame, the Scorpions stepped their foot on the gas pedal as they rode a 16-8 spurt to build a 10-point cushion, 71-61, heading into the final frame.
It was all CEU from there as Santos, Ronrei Tolentino and Lenard Santiago connived in the telling run, building the lead to its highest at 24, 94-70.
Larry Apia paced AMA Online with 24 points while Francis Paana and Nikon Alina added 12 points apiece.
