Eye candy: Why getting an OLED laptop is a treat for your eyes

The last two decades have seen an explosion in the use of digital technology accelerating our exposure to prolonged screen time especially during the pandemic. According to recent studies, screen time during the COVID-19 lockdowns recorded about 50–70 percent increase in internet. Not surprising, considering it was the only way for adults to remain socio-emotionally connected. For kids, well, we’ve all been guilty of handing them our phones and tablets (or getting them their own device) to keep them occupied and entertained.

However, too much screen time is becoming a big worry with parents as studies also confirm that increased time using digital devices could hurt children’s eyesight—even more than adults.

How are these devices affecting vision? The culprit is the “Blue Light” that comes from these devices. Regular screens produce high amounts of blue light, and this has been linked to problems like blurry vision, eyestrain, dry eye, macular degeneration, and cataracts. It can even cause some sleep issues.

A recent National Eye Institute-funded study said children’s eyes absorb more blue light than adults’ from digital device screens. Research has shown that in a five-year-old child's eyes, approximately 60% of the received blue-light emissions pass through to the retina, compared to only around 20% for a 60-year-old adult and this might increase a person’s risk of age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration later in life.

With the pandemic creating this new hybrid work setup, many professionals and students are working and studying from home and the amount of time they spend on laptop screens has exponentially increased. If you are sharing a laptop with your children, it might be wiser to invest in an OLED Laptop like the Asus Zenbook 14X OLED.
