Netflix launches ‘Vecna’s Curse,’ a light projection mapping show at Glorietta 4
*If you haven’t yet seen the latest season of Stranger Things, a bit of spoilers ahead*
The first volume of the fourth season of “Stranger Things” has introduced the viewers to its most malevolent villain. Much like past seasons’ demogorgons and the Mind Flayer, the new antagonist called Vecna hails from the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, a favorite of the series’ foursome—Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Will (Noah Schnapp). Vecna is described as a “powerful wizard who became a lich,” a form of an undead creature in the game.
It was also revealed that Vecna was also part of Dr. Martin Brenner’s experiments in Hawkins National Laboratory as Henry or Number One (Jamie Campbell Bower). In 1979, he and Eleven went into a fit of rage, sending him to the Upside Down and turning him into Vecna. Five years later, he resurfaces poses a threat to the show’s heroes.
Vecna’s appearance also gave fans a larger view of the Upside Down, at least aspects of it that have not previously been explored in the first three seasons. One particularly telling scene is with Max (Sadie Sink), a supposed target of his curse who manages to escape but into the Upside Down. It reveals a bit of key information regarding Vecna’s curse, which could be a “way out” for those in his mysterious list. Hint: Think Kate Bush, 1985, and a song called “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God).” If you love that scene too, you now have the chance to recreate it at the Glorietta 4 Activity Center.
Before readers return to Hawkins and the Upside Down for “Stranger Things 4: Volume 2,” Netflix brings the show’s newest villain to Manila through “Vecna’s Curse,” a light projection mapping show featuring the antagonist’s Mind Lair in Makati is free for the public to enjoy until July 2, Saturday, from 6 to 8 p.m., following a 15-minute interval.
