DepEd, in a statement issued Saturday, June 25, said that while the terms end and start at noon on June 30, Duterte and Briones agreed to hold a Joint Farewell and Welcome Ceremony on Monday, July 4.

During their first face-to-face meeting for the DepEd transition, Briones gave an overview of the DepEd’s work under the outgoing administration which include a summary of the scope of the agency’s responsibility as well as the contribution of the present administration to the reforms in the country’s basic education.

Meanwhile, Briones and Duterte also agreed that the guidelines for the incoming school year (SY) 2022-2023, as well as the budget of DepEd for 2023, are among the policy matters that need urgent attention.

As early as May, Briones welcomed the announcement made by now President-elect “Bongbong” Marcos that Duterte will concurrently serve as the Department of Education Secretary.

“I and the DepEd family are ready to work with her team for the orderly transition of DepEd leadership,” Briones said.

Briones said that for the first time, an outgoing administration will leave behind a medium-term plan --- the Basic Education Plan 2030.

“We are confident that DepEd will be in able hands and anticipate a continuity,” Briones added.
