Outgoing Education Secretary Leonor Briones and key officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) met with Vice President-elect Sara Duterte and her transition on Saturday, June 25, to discuss the next steps during the transition period.
The transition meeting, which took place at the Office of the Secretary in DepEd, Pasig City, was confirmed by DepEd Undersecretary for Finance Annalyn Sevilla and the Public Affairs Service office through Viber.
Based on the copy of the program obtained by the Manila Bulletin, the transition briefing started with a one-on-one conversation between the outgoing and incoming DepEd Secretaries.
There was also a briefing proper wherein the short introduction of participants took place.
It was followed by remarks from the DepEd Transition Team as well as from DepEd Undersecretaries including Sevilla, Curriculum and Instruction Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio, Administration Undersecretary Alain Del Pascua, Field, and Operations and DEACO Undersecretary Revsee Escobedo, Legislative Affairs and EPS Undersecretary Tonisito Umali, Legal Affairs Undersecretary Josephine Maribojioc, HROD and ICO Officer-in-Charge Wilfredo Cabral and Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Nepomuceno Malaluan.
In a letter addressed to Duterte dated June 18, Briones congratulated Duterte on her inauguration as the new Vice President of the Philippines.
“I look forward to turning over to you the leadership of DepEd,” Briones said. “That the department will be concurrently led by no less than the Vice President speaks to highest priority that education will be given under the incoming administration,” she added.
Briones, an appointee of President Duterte, said that during her term, the foundations for DepEd to address the challenge of decisively elevating the quality of Philippine basic education.
“I have no doubt that under your leadership, the country will see the fruition of basic education’s pivot to quality, enhanced by your new insights and innovations,” Briones told the incoming DepEd Chief.
During her inauguration on June 19, Briones asked education stakeholders to support the Duterte as she leads the biggest bureaucracy of the government.

Earlier, Briones also expressed optimism that the programs which started and were implemented under her term will continue under the new DepEd leadership.
Duterte earlier said that she will focus on addressing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on education and reviewing the K to 12 Program as DepEd Secretary.
