Besting more than 100 delegates from various countries, two awards were received by a grade 11 student from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) during the International Model United Nations (IMUN) 2022 held in Atma Jaya Catholic University in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Hailing from the Central Luzon Campus (PSHS-CLC), John Anton Benedict G. Garcia won both Best Delegate and Best Position Paper in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) committee where he delivered speeches on "Ensuring quality of education and rural access to e-learning" and "Combating the illicit trafficking of cultural property".
IMUN Indonesia 2022 is the sixth in-person conference of International MUN which ran from June 16 to 18, 2022.
According to Garcia, the goal of IMUN and MUN, in general, is to cultivate exemplary youth leadership skills. Through UN conference simulations, the main targets for development would also be diplomacy and critical thinking skills with regard to complex global issues involving multiple stakeholders.
The event had three other committees: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Health Organization (WHO), and UN Women.
Sharmaine Z. Lizada, club adviser of PSHS-CLC's MUN organization, served as Garcia’s coach.
Garcia earned the right to participate in IMUN Indonesia 2022 after winning as Most Outstanding Summit Delegate in the 2022 Pisay Model United Nations Youth Summit.
