Makati 2nd district Rep. Luis Campos Jr. is urging President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to develop offshore wind farms in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) following Marcos’s meeting with the Norwegian Ambassador.

“Offshore wind farms in the West Philippine Sea would be consistent with long-term plans to develop the area as the country’s energy hub...The advantage of offshore wind farms is that we can build them faster because they do not have land use and right-of-way issues,” Campos said in a statement on Sunday, June 19.

This, following Marcos’s meeting with Ambassador of Norway to the Philippines Bjorn Jahnsen last June 15, in which the Norwegian envoy expressed his country’s willingness to assist the Philippines develop renewable energy sources, among other things.

“Norway has the new technologies needed to put up offshore bottom-fixed or floating wind turbines. The Philippines would benefit from the eventual transfer of these technologies. We have no problem with allowing foreign companies that are majority owned by Norwegian entities to develop our offshore wind energy resources,” Campos said.

The Makati solon cited that onshore wind farms in the Philippines produce about 443 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
