An earthquake with a magnitude measuring 5.3 struck Ilocos Sur on Thursday, June 16, around 2:08 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The quake’s epicenter was traced 53 kilometers (km) southwest of Candon, Ilocos Sur. It was tectonic in origin, indicating that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Baguio City and Itogon in Benguet.
Meanwhile, the following instrumental intensities were recorded after the quake: Intensity III in VIgan City Ilocos Sur; Intensity II in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, San Antonio, Zambales, as well as Bolinao and Dagupan City in Pangasinan; Intensity I in Infanta, Pangasinan, Pasuquin and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte.
Phivolcs warned the public of possible aftershocks due to this quake.
